I still encounter customers who go to town and buy a new LCD or Plasma TV
and think it will mean that they have “Gone Digital”.
When they get home and turn it on and scan for new digital TV channels they
don’t find any. Why?… Because the new signals either don’t travel this far, or
they need a new aerial and cabling or both. Your old aerial is very inefficient
at the new digital frequencies and the cabling from the aerial to the TV will be
losing signal as well.
Please note also that connecting the aerial input of the TV to the sky satellite
dish will not work either. The TV has a UHF Digital tuner in it, not a satellite
tuner.

Remember: Only 14 months to go until we have to go digital and receive TV
via a satellite dish in our area.

Climate Summary - January 2012

The first half of January was characterised by easterly and northerly winds, which produced wet and windy weather for areas exposed to the northeast. In contrast, the second half of the month was very cool, with frequent southerly winds which brought unusually cool air over the country. For the month as a whole, lower pressures than normal prevailed over New Zealand, as well as to the north and east of the country, producing a rather cool, windy, and unsettled month overall.

Air temperature:  Below average temperatures (between 0.5°C and 1.2°C below average) were generally experienced across western regions of the North Island, as well as inland Bay of Plenty, inland Hawkes Bay, Wellington and the Wairarapa, Canterbury, and across most of Fiordland, Westland and Buller. Elsewhere (generally in the northeast of both islands), mean temperatures for January were close to average (within 0.5°C of the January average). The nation-wide average temperature in January was 16.4°C (0.7°C below the 1971–2000 January average), using NIWA’s seven-station temperature series which begins in 1909.

Rainfall:  Well below normal January rainfall totals (less than half of January normal) were observed in the greater Nelson region, as well as in Blenheim, and on Banks Peninsula. In contrast, it was an extremely wet January from Gore to Queenstown, and across much of the southern half of the North Island. For the Hokianga, and much of Auckland, Coromandel, and the Waikato, as well as coastal Bay of Plenty, rainfall was close to normal (ranging between 80 and 119 percent of January normal). Elsewhere, rainfall totals were mostly below normal (between 50 and 79 percent of January normal).

Soil moisture: Levels for most of the country were close to normal, for this time of year. Significant soil moisture deficit (more than 110 mm of deficit) was observed by the end of January in eastern areas of the South Island, the Mackenzie basin, central Otago, and parts of the Gisborne region.

Climate Outlook - February to April 2012

A moderate La Niña is in place in the tropical Pacific and is likely to persist into mid-autumn 2012.

New Zealand sea surface temperatures -  Likely to be near average in the New Zealand region.


Air temperatures -  Likely to be average in most areas but average or above average in the western South Island.

Rainfall - Likely to be near normal for most regions, but normal or below normal in the west of the South Island.

Soil moisture -  levels and river flows are likely to be near normal in most regions, but normal or below normal in the western South Island.

For the remainder of the tropical cyclone season through to May, around the normal number of cyclones is expected overall (January to March is typically the most active part of the cyclone season). On average, at least one ex-tropical cyclone passes within 500km of New Zealand in 9 out of 10 cyclone seasons.

Seeking people to help at the Transfer Station

We are quite excited about two developments down at the Hampden Transfer Station.

1 Shed Progress

After the fine efforts of builder Mark Brady and some volunteers (thanks particularly to Scott Dunavan, Bruce Parker, and Rob Campbell) we are very pleased to have got the new recycling shed to the building paper/roofing stage.

Due to limited finance, we are trying to do as much of this shed as we can with voluntary labour. We think that a team of about 6 reasonably fit people (plus a scone baker!) could have the roof completed in one day. Some would be on the ground preparing and handing up materials to others on the roof, holding materials down and nailing.   If there are others who are skilled builders then they could be putting in the wall girts (We are also on the lookout for large, sound, second-hand windows).

We need perhaps a week for the iron to get here and a calm fine day! Saturday 18 Feb is one possibility, but it might be we can do it on a week day before then if it suits people.

2          Subcontract with Delta
The second encouraging development is that Delta Utilities, who have the contract to operate the Transfer Station, have asked us if HCE would like to subcontract to do the job that Paul currently does as he has decided to move on in February.   Delta would still do the collection and transport of materials, mulching etc, and handle matters like health and safety, insurance, training, safety equipment and protective clothing.

The logic is that if the community is soon to be operating their recycling shed, then it would make a seamless arrangement if the community were also managing the incoming waste.  We see it as an opportunity for some revenue to reinvest in the community and local jobs, albeit small ones.

We would like to be able to employ 3 or 4 people who are all trained and able to do this work so there is always a backup. Or there might be a sharing arrangement. Currently the hours are Wednesday and Sunday 9.30 to 12.30 making a total of 6 hours a week.

So if you are willing to be either one of the team placing the roof on the shed on a voluntary basis or being employed receiving waste for the Transfer station, please give Elizabeth Norton your contact details (Tel 439 4887). If you are offering to help with the shed, then an indication of when you might be available would be a big help in picking the best day once the iron is on site.

Have you been left without access to a book recently? Or have you wanted to look up something urgently in a book you know?

These are two good reasons to try out the ebooks now being offered by the Waitaki District Library. You can visit the online catalogue at the Waitaki District Library website and borrow an ebook for 3 weeks. They have over a thousand titles, and many of them are free to borrow, although some are only free for a week.

To borrow an ebook you need an internet connection on your computer and a valid Waitaki District Library library card. The Waitaki District Library website gives you very clear instructions about how you can prepare your computer for this. I haven't done it myself yet, as my old library card hasn't got a PIN, but I'm looking forward to
giving it a go.

On the other hand you could come in and see us at the Hampden Library and borrow a "real" book!

THE SUMMER SCHOOL COURSES HELD DOWN OUR WAY

Sun, warmth, people from all over interested in learning something new, and our beautiful surroundings all contributed to the very successful Sustainable Skills Summer School courses held down our way for the first time during January.

There were overflowing workshops in Moeraki and Waianakarua on edible seaweeds and how to sail small boats, and in Herbert on natural beekeeping, rag doll making and better ways to maximise the capacities of communities.

It was especially nice to welcome so many Christchurch people choosing our area to take a break from the quakes.

Coming out soon will be information about courses being offered in the autumn holidays, April 14 to 22. Brochures are available in the library and on-line at www.sustainableoamaru.org.nz

Schola Cantorum of Christchurch

The Christchurch singers and viol players, "Schola Cantorum" are to put on a performance in Hampden

(At the time I am forwarding this, the precise date has not been finalised, but it will be a weekend session in mid-May. May 12th/13th is suggested. The exact date will be sent to the Rag, as soon as it is available.)

The theme of the weekend is "John Hampden - His Tymes and Music". So the music performed comes roughly under the heading of English Rennaisance. It will be easily learned by anyone with a reasonable voice and ear for music, and the weekend will finish with a "Sing-in" with the more voices, the merrier. Come and join in.

This is an event the likes of which have never been seen here before. It is a COMPLETELY different experience.

Its purpose, as well as being an interesting weekend for local people, is also to demonstrate the tremendous accoustical qualities of the Presbyterian Church. Got to be heard to be believed!

Borrowing books while you're travelling
Recently a consortium of libraries in the south of the South Island agreed to allow any holder of a library card from any of the consortium libraries to borrow free of charge from the other libraries. The Waitaki District Library is a member of that consortium, and so if you have a library card from Oamaru you will be able to borrow from most southern libraries. The most important condition seems to be that books borrowed from one library must be returned to the same library.

NOVEMBER 16 is the day for the book exchange with Oamaru Library, and so please return your books from the Oamaru exchange part of our library to us before that date and we will be able to get a full complement of new books. We are also happy to try to get specific authors, titles or subjects if you wish to suggest them to us.

A big thank you to all those who attended the service at the church on Sunday, October 9 to hear Robyn Couper preach. She had a message for us all. A special thank you to the Senior Citizens Singers from Oamaru (and Joy from Hampden). Your music showed us again what a lovely building we have. In the hall was a collection of Robyn's photos of Haiti and she was very happy to talk about her work there. Your donations amounted to $214.00 which went to the Hands for Haiti funds.

Spring has sprung and we've been drenched, so the scene should be set for serious growth. The School Garden will soon be inspirational, and maybe some of the Rural Women's Beans in a bucket will reach Jack in the Beanstalk proportions. We have a good collection of gardening books, with particular emphasis on vegetable and herb gardening - conventional, organic, biointensive, permaculture - as well as different composting principles and techniques. We have designs for bumble bee nests, and we have local tips, organised according to month, in Carolyn Youngman's Head of the thicket. Until the November book exchange with Oamaru we also have The lost garden of Heligan, which tells the story of the great Georgian garden in Cornwall which was excavated from a derelict state, restored in the 1990s and now practises the old gardening techniques (like 100ft rows of vegetables!) of its heyday.

MMM commenced in 1975 as a service mission to support missionary activity in outback Australia.
Administered from the International office in Melbourne, Australia, MMM now has a Centre in each state of Australia and international Centres in New Zealand, Hong Kong, South Africa, Thailand and Zambia.
Work teams of volunteers travel throughout Australia and overseas for building projects.
MMM provides its labour free of charge so that Christian Ministries can be released from the burden of building maintenance, and can get on with their work of reaching out with the love of Christ.
As a mission, MMM seeks to provide encouragement to Christian work and workers, as well as increasing awareness of global mission amongst local churches. By this means MMM assists the spread of the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ, and provides opportunities for local believers to become involved in helping to fulfill the great commission.
For the first 3 weeks in October MMM has been working at Camp Iona, Herbert, doing construction, painting and other maintenance. The team of workers have extended and refurbished the caretakers house, and also painted it.
The team brings it’s own accommodation but meals and additional help are provided by the locals who run the Camp. Margaret and Joe Johnson have been committee members for many years and they, as well as others, have been helping host the MMM team over the last few weeks.

Hampden and Moeraki
The 175th Anniversary of Moeraki is one of the oldest historical commemorations of European arrival in New Zealand. We look forward to the celebrations on Boxing day.
John Hughes, accompanied by W.I Haberfield and other men from the Weller brothers' Otago whaling station, established a whaling station in Moeraki Bay, Onekakara, on Boxing Day, December 26, 1836. When Hughes and his men arrived there were Māori living in the area, under Takatahara. In 1838 more Maori arrived under Matiaha Tiramorehu and settled, in close proximity to the whalers. Many whalers married Māori women and descendents live in the area today.
The Moeraki area has continued to suffer from land movement. The formation of Haven Street is a challenge and continues to slip. Council is increasing drainage options to minimise the slippage but there may come a time when Tenby Street becomes the main road in. The cost of repairs to Haven Street will be hundreds of thousands, if we persevere, and no garuntee of success.
We would like feedback from local people on this, and all matters, as we go into the long term Council plan.
Hampden/Moeraki has established leadership in considering our future as a human race. Local people have initiated meetings on a range of topics related to sustainability and small communities.With global increase in population, food and oil shortage will increase and present systems will encounter more problems.
The discussion generated by our locals and similar groups around the globe, is very relevant to solutions pertaining to our standard of living and, eventually, our survival.
Meetings to consider additions and refurbishment of the Memorial Hall, Hampden, have taken place. Consideration of possibilities is positive and a consultation via the long term plan will be a good vehicle to present submissions and determine the will of the community.
The district looks great. We have good people taking personal responsibility for their area and particularly their waste. The transfer stations and wastebusters are making excellent progress and, with government legislational teeth we will be able to bite the spoilers. There is no substitute for local people in control, and proud, of their environment. The main highway is tidy and now includes a supermarket - great effort, it is pulling in the visitors.
The new cemetery gates and memorial area (Hampden), camping grounds and beach (Hampden and Moeraki) are looking attractive.
Special places : special people.

Waitaki Citizens Award

On Tuesday 1^st of November, the Waitaki District Council held a formal meeting in the "Inkbox" of the Oamaru Opera House. The purpose of the meeting was to honour twelve citizens with the Waitaki Citizens’ Award. The recipients had been nominated by the community for having given extraordinary volunteer service to the community in which they lived.
One of those recipients was Ken Bridge, who in fact, was nominated twice for the award.
The Mayor’s preamble to Mr Bridge’s Award said that Ken had spent his life as an educationalist, and on retiring he moved to Temuka participating in Rotary, owning a Hotel and on relinquishing that, had held various relief teaching positions and buying property in Hampden. There he has active in the Waianakarua Lions, and oversaw the Hampden 130^th celebrations. Meanwhile, he established the University of the Third Age (U3A) in Oamaru and is the co-ordinator for all its tutorials and events..
Mr Bridge accepted the Award, and spoke of a church sermon he once heard. The Pastor had given each member of his congregation a piece of ‘Lego’ on arrival at the service. From the pulpit he told his flock that with the one piece they had, their options as to what they could do with it were limited. By using all the pieces available within a row of parishioners, they may achieve something. But by everyone in the Church pooling their pieces the outcome could be something remarkable. And, he said, so it was with a community. One person on their own is likely to achieve very little, but the community pooling what they had and working together could achieve wonders.
He thanked the Hampden community and the members of U3A for what they had done, and what he was receiving the recognition for.
Others to receive the Award were Joan Simpson, Tony Brady, Elsie Owen, Neil Paisley, Russell Payne, Verna Chambers, Bill Lester, Graham Sullivan, Bob Watherston, Murray Linwood and Colin Wheeler.

Community Backs Further Stage in Hall Upgrade Investigations

On Sunday morning 25 September, twenty residents attended the public meeting held by the Hampden Hall Upgrade Group (HHUG) to report back on further investigations into the proposal to improve the Hall facilities. After briefly reviewing the concepts, Bruce Parker (Architectural planner) provided preliminary estimates for the three main components of the redevelopment - the kitchen/supper room complex $54, 500 the Library/Social lounge extension and hall entry work $115, 275 and the stage relocation, new toilets and opening up the Hall $78,000. All costs are GST exclusive and based on tendered construction with no allowance for any voluntary labour input. Each component could be undertaken independently of the others depending on priority.

While upgrade works would be funded either from grants or work "in kind", the question of what effect the development might have on indirect costs such as maintenance and insurance was raised. Before making a decision whether or not to proceed to a fund-raising stage, it was agreed that approximately $5,000 of seed funding be secured to confirm these and any other remaining unknown costs. Final costings would be included in a feasibility report that could be used for applications for funding from most bodies according to a funding plan. Two resolutions were carried 14 in favour with none against. The resolutions were:

1. “This public meeting asks the Hampden Hall Upgrade Group (HHUG) to secure the necessary seed funds and undertake due diligence on the hall upgrade proposal, which includes the following: i) a structural assessment for earthquake risk, ii) fire assessment of the hall, iii) developing a firm plan to separate public toilets from the Hall building, iv) quantity survey of proposed work, v) preparing a feasibility assessment and funding plan, vi) forming a suitable legal entity to hold project funds vii) any other necessary background work, to report back to the community as soon as possible and no later than February 2012.”

2. “This public meeting asks the Hampden Hall Committee and Hampden Hall Upgrade Group to liaise closely during this process to maximise the use of resources and produce the best options for further community consultation.”

Our Man in the New Zealand Pork Industry Board

After only one year of a three-year term as one of the four elected directors of the New Zealand Pork Industry Board, Hampden man Ian Carter was elected Chairman of the Board.

Membership of the Board has already increased workload in the Carter household, with Ian attending monthly meetings in Wellington, but now, as Chairman, Ian will also be the person who is the face of the pork industry in the media. While most of us would find this very nerve-racking, presenting the industry to the public in a much more positive light is the thing Ian most hopes to be able to do in his new position.

Good luck from us all, Ian. You're the Hampden equivalent of Kurow's Richie McCaw!

Hampden Resource Recovery Shed Progress

Some may have noticed that there has not been much action on the shed for a few weeks. We had to ask Mark Brady to stop while we cleared up some confusion over who would be responsible for paying for the erection of the shed. But Mark says he will be able to get back onto it in a few weeks.
The committee have decided that meeting erection expenses will be our 'local' contribution to the shed and are currently fund-raising to replace these unexpected expenses. We have also met with Delta to confirm that we will be able to operate the shop independently and have first cut at any materials being dumped for reuse and recycling. They have agreed to that. It's intended that any profit from resale will be directed back to the local community in some way.

Many thanks to those who have offered to help on the site if it is needed. We will let you know if Mark indicates we can help or if we decide to put the iron on by working bee.

Police Ask Moeraki Residents to be Vigilant

Oamaru police are asking Moeraki residents to be vigilant and report any suspicious activity to police, following the complete destruction of a Tenby St house in a fire overnight on 13 September.
Oamaru Detective Warren Duncan says police and the fire service are investigating the fire at 8 Tenby St, together with an earlier fire which occurred at a house across the road at 12 Tenby St on 8 September. In this earlier fire the house was extensively damaged.
Both fires are being treated as suspicious.
'We ask that Moeraki residents be extra vigilant and report anything suspicious to Oamaru police. We would like to hear from anyone who was in the area of Tenby Street over these two nights or has any information about the house fires.'
Any information can be passed onto local police or to Detective Warren Duncan at the Oamaru Police Station on 03 433 1400.

Hampden Sewerage Scheme

A sewage treatment scheme for Hampden is on the agenda again, five years after a community group started investigating options for the coastal township.

The Waitaki District Council has engaged Waugh Consultants Ltd to consult the community on alternatives to a reticulated scheme and investigate what subsidies may be had from the Ministry of Health.

The council already has funds for the consultant's investigation.

Most properties in Hampden use septic tanks and sewage disposal has been an issue for decades. Some properties have problems disposing of sewage and some tanks have failed.

In 2006, the council set up a community working party to investigate a reticulated sewerage scheme. A consultant calculated it could cost ratepayers between $2067 and $3389 each a year, and that was deemed too expensive.

Other options were proposed, including a septic tank and cluster system, with the council bulk-buying equipment and implementing a loan scheme for ratepayers to upgrade.

175th Moeraki Anniversary Update

With local members of our community we have been planning a celebration of the arrival of the early settlers to Moeraki where they set up a successful whaling station (as well as engaging in fishing and farming).
On the 26th December 2011 we welcome all whanau home and interested groups who would like to participate.
Our program will include a church service, the official opening, low tide sand competitions, a treasure hunt, fun run, lolly scramble, food stalls, charter boat and helicopter rides, a museum and photo display, wine and cheese evening and a dance in the Coronation Hall.

Hampden Branch Rural Women NZ

This group’s latest meeting was held on 26th August at the Coast Café in Kakanui where everybody present enjoyed a very good lunch. Following the meal Dr Derek Allen gave us an outline of the work he does in various parts of the world providing medical care for the poorest people in the community. His work takes him to Vanuatu, Burkina Faso, Indonesia and all places where the poverty is widespread and desperate. There are literally thousands of people, a great many of them children, who have no access to medical care at all.
Dr Allen’s work is entirely voluntary and covers everything from dental hygiene to appendectomies. He also arranges for clean water supplies and gives advice on general cleanliness and personal hygiene. His organisation TroppoDoc is dependent on donations and volunteers in the field. and is always looking for people prepared to give their time to help out. The biggest problem faced is that there are simply not enough doctors/nurses and trained staff to administer medical care to the huge numbers of people who need it many of whom are living in very isolated areas.
The Hampden Branch has donated $200.00 to provide a water tank and over the next few months will be collecting spectacles, sunglasses and hearing aids all of which are badly needed by Dr Allen’s patients. So - COME ON HAMPDEN - go though the drawers and cupboards and gather up all those out of date glasses that you have been wondering what to do with, all the sunglasses that are no longer fashionable and any hearing aids that have been superceded. Climate Change Seminar

Dr Jim Salinger, and others are presenting a seminar in Palmerston on 'The Local Concerns of Climate and Changing Weather Patterns'. Hampden Community Energy and Waihemo WasteBusters have jointly booked the use of the library at East Otago High School in Palmerston for this seminar. The meeting will be at EOHS Library on Monday October 10th. The starting time will probably be 7 pm but that will be confirmed later. The evening will commence with a light supper.
The subjects Dr Salinger will be likely to deal with are: Climate variability; Projected climate change; Climate change adaptation; Climate risk management; Climate change mitigation. Assisting Dr Salinger to address the questions and concerns of local people will be Rod Oram and Bob Lloyd. A questionnaire/survey is being circulated to mail boxes in the Waihemo and Hampden areas. Please note any concerns on these subjects you may have and return the questionnaire. The concerns will be collated, then sent to the speakers so that they can address exactly the points raised by local people.
Anyone is welcome to attend the evening. People from Oamaru and other areas who wish to submit to the evening can phone 4394 887 to get further details and a copy of the survey.
Note: Although there is an election looming, this meeting has nothing to do with politics, political parties, or rugby.

Trustpower Awards 2011

'We are all volunteers to some extent in some part of our lives', commented Mayor Alex Familton in his preamble to the Trustpower Community Awards presentation, and went on to acknowledge the major role volunteers play in making our district’s communities tick.
He was speaking to the representatives of twenty-four voluntary organisations from the Waihemo district, who were enjoying drinks, nibbles and conversation at the Waihemo Tavern, courtesy of Trustpower. There was a very respectable peppering of Hampden people in the gathering, because seven of the community organisations nominated for awards were Hampden groups. Trustpower Community Relations Manager, Graeme Purches, commented on the level of Hampden volunteering and said 'it must be something in the water up there'. 'Why do they need to change the water then?' muttered Howard Selwood.
The very first award to be called was Hampden Community Energy, Runner-up in the Heritage and Environment section. A rather startled Elizabeth Norton and Colleen Dooley went up to accept the award and a cheque for $250. The next Hampden name was the Hampden Senior Citizens Group, Runner-up in the Health and Wellbeing section. Jack Lyford and Shirley Murcott accepted the award and cheque for their group, later commenting that several other Senior Citizens were also in the room as representatives for other voluntary organisations. Ian Sutherland and Leona Trimble represented the Hampden Skyline Organising Group, Runner-up in the Sport and Leisure section. Each organisation gave an acceptance comment, and it struck me that, almost without exception, they mentioned that they would love more people to get involved.
Sadly, there were some other very deserving Hampden organisations who were not lucky on the night. But if there is a Trustpower customer out there who would be prepared to buy the $100 Trustpower voucher Hampden nominators received as the winner of the Nominators’ Draw, that prize could be donated to one of the groups that missed out. All our volunteers do an amazing job, and they can do with all the help we can give them.

Breakneck Road Bridge Replacement

Council has decided to defer beginning the work for the bridge replacement until late February/early March 20 I 2 to prevent possible disruption over the Christmas holiday period.
The revised contract will be put out to tender later this year.
We are disappointed at this further delay, but consider it to be the prudent course of action.

A small, enthusiastic group met at the Church Hall on Saturday, August 13 at 4pm to discuss the possibility of forming a Friends of the Church Group to promote and secure the future of the church and Hall for and by the local community. Following a cup of tea and with the assistance of our Mayor we posed and answered questions on possible uses while being realistically aware of the size of the task.
The Steering Group Committee feels it has a mandate to go forward. We invite the Community to participate in keeping a piece of history. If you have an idea or would like to use the Church or hall contact Margaret Cruickshank 4394180 for details and keys etc.

Report from Waihemo Community Board

The new Cemetery Gates are up and in place and I believe that they look fairly good. However, I am a bit concerned about just how light they are and hope they don’t get damaged. I think I was a bit smart, even if I do say so myself, because by helping wherever I could in getting them here and helping install them I have managed to save the old gates with the hope of future total restoration.
On the 13th August I held another feedback day in the Hampden Hall. Not a large number of people attended but I have always said that I would prefer quality instead of quantity. But seriously now, that was the second of those meetings and I have found them extremely useful. The main reason is because it is two way communication, as it’s not just me telling those present about what is happening but I also get the feedback and learn how other people see things.
Apart from that there is very little to report because our meeting was postponed due to the weather and road conditions. Therefore I will probably be holding one every couple of months or so as the main means of communicating.

At Hampden Library we try to cover a wide variety of interests. One of the options open to Hampden Library members is that of video and DVD loans. This area of the library has recently had several additions. The children’s video collection has six new films available:- Twisted Tales of Felix the Cat 2 x Buzz and Poppy films, Winter Story, The Rainbow Fish, Rock a Bye Bananas, The Wiggles ABC
In the adult DVD collection there have also been some additions made, among them are the following:- The Peter Sellers Collection (4 films), The Philadelphia Experiment, The Sweet Smell of Success, Car Wash, Better off Dead.
All DVD and video loans are free of charge to members of the library. Come along and have a look at our collection.
The book sections of the library have undergone a 'weeding' giving us more room on the shelves for new books to be added. Weeding is the term used for taking out books that have outlived their usefulness or been replaced by up to date editions. It is now much easier to take books off the shelf and, more importantly, to put them back. At the moment there looks to be a lot of gaps but this effect will not last long.
To finish I would like to share this little verse with you. I found it at the front of a book called 'Ruffle on my Longjohns' by Isabel Edwards and the poem itself was written by Janice James:

Hampden Community Energy AGM

The AGM was held in the Hampden Community Hall on Friday 12th August. Dugald MacTavish gave his report of the group's activities over the past 12 months and outlined possible projects for the coming year. He also thanked those who had served on the committee. The committee for the next 12 months was elected and the members are:- D. MacTavish, R. Campbell, C. Dooley, S. Dunavan, M. Rogers, B. Parker, E. Norton, M. Corish and R. Welton Following the formal business of the evening dance choreographer and adventurer, Bronwyn Judge, entertained us with a talk and film clips of her recent trip to Senegal and was, in turn, entertained by those that tried to learn some of the dance steps she demonstrated. Thanks to Trevor Norton and Graeme Youngman for sorting out the projector electronics.
A light supper was served before everyone headed home.

People, The Most Important Commodity
In any community such as ours, this is the case. There are a wide variety of interesting organisations, catering for like minded people such as youth groups, church groups, women’s groups, needlework, crafts, sports, garden clubs to name but a few. One particular club serving citizens in areas adjacent to Hampden is the Hampden Senior Citizens Club, a group of around 30 people, and believe it or not, it has been providing fellowship, entertainment and fun for more than 30 years!

In the past members have enjoyed coach trips to interesting places, film shows, ten pin bowling, 4WD trips, excellent speakers, fishing trips, dining out, BBQs, bowls and housie to name just some of our activities. It is a very caring community organisation, as recently demonstrated during the record stormy weather. There were many visits and calls checking on older folk, delivery of soup and offers of shopping and transport.
The committee has just recently set up an interesting 12 month program for the year ahead. The President and Committee cordially invite people who enjoy good caring company and interesting programs to join us once a month and share our interests New members are most welcome.
